William Blake, the English poet, Natural Mystic, painter and idiosyncratic social critic of romanticism acts as the model for The Marriage of Heaven & Hell - the first conjoint project by Johannes König, art director at Melville Brand Design (Munich), and freelance photographer Jan Voss (Berlin). The handmade book links fashion photography, illustration and graphic design in a new way and can be seen for the first time at the urban art fair STROKE.02 in Munich (Sederanger 3/Tucherpark/Raum 3.11) from 27 to 30 March.
On 120 pages, König and Voss make the analogue meet the digital and explore the boundaries of their genres. In the process, typographically newly interpreted quotations of William Blake´s work „The Marriage of Heaven and Hell“ alternate with detailed line drawings reminding of historic steel engravings and severely reduced graphic elements are combined with darkly appearing, vanguard fashion photography. Finely hachured creatures composed of part human and part animal and hovering models resembling mythical figures encounter a clear, expressive typography and unfurl a mystic-suggestive power.
The Marriage of Heaven & Hell is handmade. The cover consists of wafer-thin, haggled cotton with zigzag stitch. There are various sorts of paper used and the photos are sewn onto the insides by hand. The book is rounded off by diverse paint finishings and a lasered ribbon page marker. König specially developed a new font for The Marriage Heaven & Hell. „Abracadabra“ is inspired by „Futura“ and is particularly appropriate to be used in the area of fashion. Fein gestrichelte, menschliche Tiergeschöpfe, die auf schwebende, Traumwesen und eine klare, expressive Typografie treffen, entfalten eine mystisch-suggestive Kraft.
The Marriage of Heaven & Hell ist in Handarbeit gefertigt. Der Umschlag zeigt hauchdünne, zerschlissene Baumwolle mit Zickzackstich. Es werden unterschiedliche Papiersorten verwendet, die Fotos sind von Hand auf die Innenseiten genäht. Diverse Lackveredelungen und ein gelasertes Lesebändchen komplettieren das Buch. König hat eigens für The Marriage of Heaven & Hell eine neue Typo entwickelt. Die „Abracadabra“ ist inspiriert von der „Futura“ und vor allem für den Gebrauch im Bereich Fashion ausgelegt.
